December 2002 Jaglines

Mama always said, "Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get." This was a must see game as the Jags took to the ice for the first time at their own home rink taking on Lakeville in the season opener. The skating was great and the shots on goal were numerous but the net eluded them all except one. However the penalty box seemed to be the place to be. As Lakeville ended the game with 12 penalties and the Jags came away with 5. While the Jags were shorthanded, a pass from Mike Waterston to Kyle Gallus found its way past the goalie to even up the score. The game ended in a tie. Brandon Creager, goalie did one fine job defending the net that day blocking 39 shots on goal. That is all I have to say, about that.

Memories of the Anoka Tournament-We Came, We Saw, We Left.

The game with Stillwater was like watching a documentary on the Congo. It was all Jag paddling through. Scoring 4 times from Bushmaker, Birnie, Gallus, and Larson. Otherwise it was "Still" water running.
Once again, the Jaguar "yutes" took to the ice against Champlin Park. Scoring our first goal at 10:11 with Jes Schwartz on a pass from Eric Hanson. After that it was all Jag muscle out playing the opponent. Kyle Gallus scoring his second goal of the season off of a Dan Hanson feed. Then shorthanded, an unassisted score by Kyle Gallus put us into the lead. The Jags never looked back after that. So does the defense hold water? Are you sure? How can you be so sure? It was verified with the calibrated body checking of Jarred Bushmaker and Dan Hanson. Kevin Leak scored with assistance from Jarred Bushmaker and Mitch Benson. Next, Mike Waterston, scored on a feed from Kyle Gallus and David Norine. Pat Fiterer got the third period jumping, scoring off a Kevin Leak pass. Then Mitch Benson ended the game with another score coming from assists of Pat Fiterer and Kevin Leak. Nicholas Spahn crouching in front of the net had a great performance making 27 saves. When the "biological clock" stopped ticking and counting up all the scores we had 2, no 5 and don't forget 6 and 7 yep 7 count them 7 goals. Let the record show it was 7-2. We did good out there and we like the competition. This could be a sign of things to come, we win all our games with some help from all the team members, and they look at each other and say thank you. Oh my God, what a hockey dream!
Ike, tell Wayzata we're comin, and the victory is coming with us back to Bloomington. The stands were packed for the shootout at the OK corral. The only score posted was a goal from David Norine on an assist from Kevin Leak. The second period was laden with plenty of shots fired only it was not the puck getting all the action. It was ugly as 14 penalties were racked up by the teams. We were caught off guard as we were down 3-1 going into the last period. The dust kicked up even harder in the third period as the Jags shut down Wayzata and scored all the goals that period. Goals by Kyle Gallus, Kevin Leak, and Pat Fiterer with assists from Kevin Leak and Dan Birnie. Kyle Gallus is the Huckleberry of the game with the winning goal. One impressive goal coming unassisted while the team was shorthanded. Taking all the sneers and geers from the rowdy gringos in the stands, Brandon Creager once again did a great job protecting the net with 31 saves. Isn't that a daisy? The Jags left the corral smoking and in a state of shock. 5-3 was the score. The good guys win again. If Wayzata wants to take the Moorhead tournament, they have to come through us. We can do this. You are talking about playing "Iron Man" Hockey. Nick Spahn was in the net and told his guys, I don't care what you do, tell him a story, spit in his ear, just keep them out of my face. So onto the ice they went. It hurts when they put it in the net, don't it? So we hurt them good. Finding the net was Birnie, Leak, Bushmaker, Norine, and Fiterer. It hurts when they poke you in the face like that doesn't it Paul Larson? The Jags Win, They Actually Win, Oh My God They Actually Win.

"This is a magnum 44 black biscuit. It can take your head clean off." The Jags took to the ice once again wanting to stay undefeated. This time the game was against Edina. "Do you feel lucky? Well do you, punk?" Nick Spahn stood tall in the net and hung in there until close to the end of the first period. " You have to ask yourself one question, did he fire 7 or 8 shots? Now in all the excitement I don't know myself." But it was 9 shots in that period. The skating was great. In the second period, the Jags got chances-plenty of chances. "Make my day." And while the trips to the penalty box once again were numerous, scoring was held to zero. When the game ended it was plain to see that "A man's got to know his limitations." They got the best of us. 4-0. "Swell."
